{"id":1955,"date":"2020-10-06T09:00:53","date_gmt":"2020-10-06T13:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/?p=1955"},"modified":"2025-07-14T17:54:14","modified_gmt":"2025-07-14T21:54:14","slug":"how-to-avoid-asking-the-wrong-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/how-to-avoid-asking-the-wrong-question\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Avoid Asking the Wrong Question"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Hostility, incivility, even demonization\u2014evidence of\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/changing-cultures-from-one-extreme-to-another\/\">toxic tribalism<\/a> that provides an almost overwhelming temptation to join. Whenever I face difficulties, I wonder what God\u2019s trying to teach me. I want to learn the lessons, so I don\u2019t need to repeat the class. But\u00a0what if I\u2019m asking the wrong question? What if instead of, \u201cWhat am I learning?\u201d I need to ask, \u201cWho am I becoming?\u201d Maybe the challenges we encounter aren\u2019t meant to teach us but to make us. Perhaps God intends them for our formation rather than our education. Like carbon that becomes a diamond because of extended heat and pressure.\u00a0And what does he want to form in us? The character of Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>For those God foreknew&nbsp;he also predestined&nbsp;to be conformed to the image of his Son.<\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ro+8%3A29&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Romans 8:29<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Difficult seasons contain seeds of spiritual growth. The Spirit intercedes for us when we struggle to pray. And the Father promises to accomplish his purpose in and through those who love him, assuring us we\u2019re more than conquerors in Christ. Still, we can\u2019t become like Jesus without exercising the power God gives us to make God-honoring choices.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>His divine power&nbsp;has given us everything we need for a godly life\u2026 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;&nbsp;and to knowledge, self-control;&nbsp;and to self-control, perseverance;&nbsp;and to perseverance, godliness\u2026 <\/p><cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+pe+1%3A3-6&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 Peter 1:3, 5-6<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Who will we be after November 3? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonforum.org\/columns\/daily-article\/judge-amy-coney-barretts-example-of-civility-choosing-today-to-invest-in-tomorrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jim Denison <\/a>advised: \u201cYou and I need to conduct ourselves during the election in ways that will advance the gospel when the election is over.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how can we avoid asking the wrong question? Not by focusing on the lessons we can learn, but on the lives we can live\u00a0to make the Christ-difference in our world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I face difficulties, I often ask what I should learn.
