{"id":566,"date":"2019-06-26T08:00:08","date_gmt":"2019-06-26T12:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/?p=566"},"modified":"2025-09-07T14:49:34","modified_gmt":"2025-09-07T18:49:34","slug":"the-bible-speaks-to-all-cultures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/the-bible-speaks-to-all-cultures\/","title":{"rendered":"The Bible Speaks to All Cultures"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Does God\u2019s Word speak only to one culture? \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Guilt, shame, and fear (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/different-cultures-guilt-shame-and-fear\/\" target=\"_blank\">Guilt, shame, and fear<\/a> <g class=\"gr_ gr_67 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace gr-progress sel\" id=\"67\" data-gr-id=\"67\">a<\/g>re present in every person and every culture, but to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"differing degrees (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/honorshame.com\/3-1-integrating-guilt-shame-fear\/\" target=\"_blank\">differing degrees<\/a>.\u201d In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis 3<\/a>, we find the story of the first sin and the consequences of guilt, shame, and fear.&nbsp;Like Adam and Eve, we\u2019re all sinners in need of salvation. The Bible speaks to all of us in the language of our culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bible Speaks to Guilt\/Innocence Cultures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When Adam and Eve disobeyed God\u2019s command and ate the forbidden fruit, they were guilty of breaking the only rule God had given them. Their sin resulted in open eyes, but they had <a href=\"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/what-else-was-lost-in-the-garden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"lost their innocence (opens in a new tab)\">lost their innocence<\/a>; they knew right from wrong.&nbsp;(Innocence = righteousness or being right.)&nbsp;They experienced guilt because of their wrongdoing. They suffered spiritual death because they had broken their relationship with God and would face eventual physical death. In his mercy, God clothed them and then banished them from the garden so they wouldn&#8217;t have to live forever with the consequences of their sin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharing the news of God\u2019s love and forgiveness in guilt\/innocence cultures often involves using legal or courtroom language. We may refer to the \u201cRoman Road\u201d or the \u201cFour Spiritual Laws.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bible Speaks to Honor\/Shame Cultures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When Adam and Eve realized they were naked, they sewed fig leaves together to cover their shame. Before they sinned, they were naked, &#8220;and they felt no shame.&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+2%3A25&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genesis 2:25<\/a>) But afterward, they hid from God, knowing both they and he had lost face; they had dishonored him. Consequently, God expelled them from the garden, but, in mercy, he made garments to cover their nakedness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The word \u201cshame\u201d and its synonyms occur more than twice as often as \u201cguilt\u201d and its synonyms in the Hebrew Scriptures and over four times as often in the Christian Scriptures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most effective faith-sharing in honor\/shame cultures comes out of a relationship. Once we have built a friendship with someone, we can use metaphors of family or community to communicate the good news that God invites us to share his honor. We have all dishonored our heavenly Father. To dishonor or shame your father can result in exclusion from the family. Restoration of relationships often requires the work of a mediator, someone who can bring the two sides together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bible Speaks to Fear\/Power Cultures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What did Adam and Eve do when they heard God walking in the garden? They hid. Why? They were afraid. They had failed to resist the power of evil. But in his mercy, God searched for and found them, proving we can never hide from God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often the verses and stories that speak to a fear\/power culture are those that refer to warfare and combat, those that describe the spiritual battle taking place and God\u2019s power over evil. People in fear\/power cultures want to see God\u2019s power in daily life. Jesus\u2019 followers have access to his divine power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">God\u2019s Solution to Guilt, Shame, and Fear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Adam and Eve\u2019s sin introduced guilt, shame, and fear into the world, God provided a solution through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. God restores believers\u2019 innocence, <a href=\"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/honor-what-everybody-wants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"honor (opens in a new tab)\">honor<\/a>, and power through their relationship with him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Culture does not limit God&#8217;s ability to speak. His good news is for every person and every culture. To make disciples in honor\/shame and fear\/power cultures requires more than repacking our guilt\/innocence evangelistic presentations. Culture should determine both the content and means of sharing faith, but the underlying message is the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading the Bible through the eyes of diverse cultures revealed many facets of God\u2019s message I\u2019d not seen before. The Bible speaks to more than my guilt\/innocence culture. Why don\u2019t you try reading God\u2019s Word through the lens of another culture?
