The previous night I was chatting with a neighbor when I grabbed my eye. A speck of dust creates agony when it lodges between your eyeball and your contact lens. As Eve ignored danger, I also did and popped out the contact just as a breeze blew. I couldn\u2019t stay to search since it was time for church; so, off I went half-blind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next morning, I headed outside with a prayer.&nbsp;<em>Lord, I know you can see all; please show me where to look. Open my eyes; help me see.<\/em> I was young, pregnant, and trying to stretch money to impossible lengths. Replacing a lost contact wasn\u2019t in the budget. After searching until my eyes crossed, I spied a shiny piece of plastic. Success! I found what I\u2019d lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone knows the pain of losing something valuable. What did Adam and Eve lose in the Garden? In addition to losing intimate fellowship with God, Adam and Eve lost the spirit of cooperation they&#8217;d shared. They became competitors rather than companions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today the concept of partnership dissolves in the push for dominance\u2014not only in marriage but in all relationships. Have we lost who and what God created us to be? Let\u2019s look back at Eve, not in her worst moment (Genesis 3), but as God created her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eve: Created in God\u2019s Image<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>God created&nbsp;mankind (Hebrew:&nbsp;<em>adam<\/em>)&nbsp;in his own image,&nbsp;in the image of God&nbsp;he created them; male and female&nbsp;he created them.<\/p><cite>Genesis 1:27<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Two third-century rabbis (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/thetorah.com\/the-making-of-adam\/\" target=\"_blank\">Two third-century rabbis<\/a> interpreted these words to mean God created the first human with two faces and no back. When God later took one of the man\u2019s ribs (literally:&nbsp;sides, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ge+2%3A21&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Genesis 2:21 (opens in a new tab)\">Genesis 2:21<\/a>), he separated the front side from the back side, making what we call male and female. Reflecting God\u2019s image requires both male and female working together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ge+1%3A28&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Genesis 1:28 (opens in a new tab)\">Genesis 1:28<\/a>, God gave Adam and Eve a mandate to create a culture that honored him. They were to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reflect God&#8217;s image<\/li><li>Reproduce physically and spiritually<\/li><li>Rule creation as God&#8217;s representatives<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine hearing this story for the first time. You live in a collectivist, honor\/shame culture in which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/the-pursuit-of-honor-in-the-non-western-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"gaining honor (opens in a new tab)\">gaining honor<\/a><g class=\"gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling gr-progress sel\" id=\"12\" data-gr-id=\"12\"> <\/g>is your highest goal. What greater honor could you have than being an image-bearer of the Creator God? Since your relationships define your identity, what could be more honorable than being part of God\u2019s family?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eve: A Suitable Helper<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Genesis+2%3A4-23&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\">Genesis 2<\/a> includes more information about Eve\u2019s creation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The Lord God said, \u201cIt is not good for the man [<em>adam<\/em>] to be alone. I will make a helper [<em>ezer<\/em>] suitable [<em>kenegdo<\/em>] for him.\u201d<\/p><cite>Genesis 2:18<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ezer<\/em> comes from two roots: power and strength. Nineteen times in the Old Testament,&nbsp;<em>ezer&nbsp;<\/em>refers to God as Israel\u2019s helper. As Elise Crapuchettes, author of&nbsp;<em>Popes and Feminists<\/em>, observed, \u201cHow could this help be a milquetoast, weak, insipid help? God himself is providing it.\u201d In Eve, God supplied Adam with divine help so together, they could accomplish the mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Kenegdo<\/em> means \u201clike what is in front of him.\u201d Although different, Adam and Eve are equal. But after the Fall (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=ge+3&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Genesis 3 (opens in a new tab)\">Genesis 3<\/a>), control and power became issues, and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"honor competition (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/honor-games-how-to-play-win\/\" target=\"_blank\">honor competition<\/a><g class=\"gr_ gr_25 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace gr-progress sel\" id=\"25\" data-gr-id=\"25\"> <\/g>began because with honor comes power. The struggle started for them and continues for their descendants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3 Steps to Recover What We Lost<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The battle for power and control colors every relationship. God desires restored relationships for us\u2014both with him and with one another. Jesus came to reconcile us to God and to empower us to recapture the unity that permeated the Garden before the Fall. How? Jesus-followers have access to the answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Recognize&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/honor-what-everybody-wants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"genuine honor (opens in a new tab)\">genuine honor<\/a> comes from God\u2014not from what we have accomplished (achieved honor) but from our relationship with his Son (ascribed honor)<\/li><li>Refuse to play humanity\u2019s honor games<\/li><li>Resolve to build God\u2019s kingdom, not our own<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Only God can give heart-satisfying honor. As we \u201csubmit to one another out of reverence for Christ\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Ephesians+5%3A21&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ephesians 5:21<\/a>), we can reclaim what we\u2019ve lost. We&#8217;ll discover the joy and peace of being who God created us to be so we can do what he called us to do.
