Angered by his wife\u2019s conversion, a local businessman hired the officers to kill the couple. A bullet to the heart killed Neil instantly. The toddler fell from his mother\u2019s arms as the bullets pierced her arm and stomach. The wounds he sustained were more emotional than physical. Shiromi fell unconscious, but not before looking into the eyes of the man who killed her husband and wounded her. She regained consciousness three weeks later to discover Neil was dead. Shiromi\u2019s body, heart, and life were broken. Another person\u2019s decision can break our lives apart in an instant. Both Shiromi and Bathsheba suffered brokenness because of someone else\u2019s choices. Yet both picked up the pieces, putting life back together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wrong Choices Lead to Broken Lives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2+sa+11&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"2 Samuel 11 (opens in a new tab)\">2 Samuel 11<\/a> explains that although it was spring and time for war, King David stayed home, sending his army to fight without him. The narrator sets up the story by emphasizing that David failed to assume his rightful and honorable position as head of his army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One evening, David took a walk on the roof of his palace. As he surveyed his kingdom, he spied a beautiful woman taking a ritual bath after her monthly cycle. Not only did the king see but continued to watch. Overcome by lust, he sent a messenger to inquire about her. With that move, the palace gossip mill would have sprung into action. When the messenger returned, he answered David\u2019s question by naming Bathsheba\u2019s father and husband. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Her identity and honor came from her relationships (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/honor-what-everybody-wants\/\">Her identity and honor came from her relationships<\/a>. From then on, she\u2019s referred to as \u201cthe wife of Uriah,\u201d emphasizing her status as property. However, the author accentuates<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>David and Uriah&#8217;s battle for honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Messengers brought Bathsheba to the king, and he slept with her. Although scholars debate whether she was the victim or villain, could she have refused? After David finished, he sent Bathsheba away, heaping shame on her. Whereas he could have paid Uriah for her, he didn&#8217;t want her either as a wife or a concubine. Most likely, he didn\u2019t think about her again until\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bathsheba Found Her Voice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bathsheba sent a message to the king informing him of her pregnancy. (11:5) For the first time, we see Bathsheba initiating action. If the adultery were a secret, David could\u2019ve ignored her message. Instead, he sent for Uriah, hoping the soldier would <a href=\"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/the-pursuit-of-honor-in-the-non-western-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"rescue the king\u2019s honor (opens in a new tab)\">rescue the king\u2019s honor<\/a> by making it appear the baby was his. But Uriah refused to play along, defending his honor and shaming David. With Uriah dead, David could marry Bathsheba, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"save face (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/nancylucenay.com\/staging\/8869\/importance-of-face-honor-shame-dynamic-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">save face<\/a>, and restore his honor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After David\u2019s death, Bathsheba\u2019s son Solomon became king, and she became the honored queen mother.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/devotionals\/all-women-bible\/2011\/09\/26\">Tradition says she is the author of Proverbs 31, given to Solomon when he married Pharaoh\u2019s daughter<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Picking up the Pieces of a Broken Life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How did Bathsheba and Shiromi pick up the pieces of a broken life? How can we? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=pro+31&amp;version=NIV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Proverbs 31 (opens in a new tab)\">Proverbs 31<\/a> shows us how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Respond with prayer. \u201cListen, my son, the answer to my prayers!\u201d (31:2) Bathsheba responded to her heartache with prayer. Shiromi called out to Jesus as soon as she heard the shots.<\/li><li>Resolve to forgive. \u201cHer husband&nbsp;has full confidence in her\u2026 She brings him good, not harm.\u201d (31:11, 12) Healthy relationships require forgiveness. When I asked Shiromi how she was teaching her son to forgive, she replied, \u201cI show him.\u201d The murderers escaped prosecution because of political maneuvering. Shiromi encountered the hitman each day as she took her son to school\u2014an opportunity to show her son the face of forgiveness.<\/li><li>Reach out to serve.&nbsp;\u201cShe opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy.\u201d (31:20) Refusing to surrender to fear and self-pity, Shiromi returned to pastor the South Asian church her husband had pastored.<\/li><li>Rely on God\u2019s power. \u201cCharm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;is to be praised.\u201d (31:30) None of the above is possible without depending on the Lord\u2019s strength.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>God can turn broken pieces into masterpieces.
